COWBOY MOUTH

Young Artists at the Chelsea

Inspired by the bygone days when Mapplethorpe, Dylan, Hendrix and de Kooning filled the halls with music and electric creativity, in June 2015 Young Artists at the Chelsea brought artists at the legendary Hotel Chelsea to once again bring new energy into the storied establishment.

Cowboy Mouth: Young Artists at the Chelsea was an immersive three-part evening centered around Sam Shepard and Patti Smith’s collaborative work, Cowboy Mouth—a surreal short play both penned during and inspired by the heyday of the historic Hotel Chelsea in downtown New York. Each evening began with visual and performance art piece, The Traveling Bag, by Rachel Libeskind, followed by the play itself and culminated in music and dancing by rising New York musical talent.

Keeping the Hotel Chelsea’s rich tradition of artistic collaboration and iconoclasm in mind, from June 10th to 20th Amanda + James, Manderley Productions, and Chelsea Hotels brought together a new cast of young artists eager to enter this revered space. With Cowboy Mouth, these artists paid homage to the work and spirit of those who came before while simultaneously offering a fresh take on this revered landmark.
